Act 2: Interactions

Liam

Prompt Card: The Star

They approach the small fountain inside the small plaza. A classmate is there, Liam, he is smoking and beckons them over. Liam reveals to them that he was expelled today. The classmate doesn’t know what to say but sits down. They smoke with Liam before heading to their class.

Salima

Prompt Card: The Chariot

They sit down in class next to Salima, an older woman attending college for the first time. The two make pleasant conversation with one another until Suzan announces she’s finally getting divorced. She seems both sad and relieved.

Inciting Event

Card: The Hermit, a Festival

Outside the window they hear the priests chanting and swinging their thuribles. They crane their neck and peek out the window to see the people lining up in front of the wide shallow oil bowl. They will go later with their family.

Act 3: The Turn

Corpses Discovered: 1(Salima), 8(Person), 5(Tyoma), 7(Kurshid), 6(Lala), 4(Liam)

Discovery 1:

Card: Knight of Cups, another character reacts strangely to a death

A scream is heard by all from outside. They stand up and run outside despite the calls from the professor and the classmates. There are ancient-looking arrows jutting out of the stone leading back towards the plaza. There he sees the bodies for the first time.

Liam is floating in the fountain, surrounded by a halo of blood. Another classmate, Kurshid, lies next to him, slumped over the side.

Besides the bodies is the cashier at the juice stand. Xe look up at them and shake xeir head.

“It doesn’t know how to use it,” xe say.

Discovery 2:

Card: 10 of Pentacles Something has been left with the victims

They hear more screaming coming from another hallway and they rush towards it. Down the open corridors they see more bodies. Tyoma, a local Altar is dead, the thurible still smoking beside him, and Lala, another student, her eyes are closed and an arrow in her chest.

They approach them recklessly, rushing over and shaking them. They notice something on the arrow embedded in Lala there is a flowing script which they cannot read. They spend a moment trying to figure it out before leaving.

Discovery 3:

Card: The Magician A murder is unusally gruesome, showy or ritualistic

They find themselves approaching one of the Blessed Trees, the one nearest to the university. Upon it is pinned a person with a tattoo on its forehead. That is all they can tell about it. Their features are blank and they forget what this person looks like when they take their eyes off it.

Below them are more bodies, Salima, and others they do not know. They are shaking, and crying, and do not understand and then they too fall along with Squ’hev.

Act 4: Revelations

Report on the Tragedies in Squ’hev

The city knows of the tragedy, but they are one of many instances. They are a number in a report handed to the rulers of far off land who read with a heavy sigh. They are mourned together as a tragedy against humanity and not as an individual.

2. They see a full moon outside their window on a clear night.

3. There is a calendar on the wall next to the door. It features an orange cat in a basket.

They wake up at 8 am, get dressed, and head downstairs. Their two siblings are already awake and their father is making coffee. They sit down, eat some cereal and have a mundane conversation. They feel as though they shouldn’t go to class today but they cannot say why.

They leave the house at 9 am and ride to their first class which begins at 10.

Act 2: Interactions

The Person

Card: 9 of Wands

They are walking through the crowded streets and over the bridge towards their university. They see them, on the roof high above, a person standing and watching. They bump into someone else on the street and have immediately forgotten about the roof-watcher.

Liam

Card: The Lovers

They talk with Liam again about his expulsion. They smoke and this time they take Liam’s hand in theirs. They say nothing, and leave when they finish their cigarette.

Tyoma

Card: 5 of Swords

They pause and consider Liam once they are out of view. Altar Tyoma is there, having a pleasant conversation with another student. He sees them, excuses himself from the other student and speaks with them. They talk briefly about the festival and they promise that they are attending with their family by the tree in their neighborhood.

Inciting Event

Card: The Hermit, a Festival

Outside the window they hear the priests chanting and swinging their thuribles. The festival has begun. They know Altar Tyoma will be the one preceding on campus. They wished they could anoint the tree here instead of with their family.

Act 3: The Turn

Corpses Discovered: 9(Uriah), 3(Cashier), 6(Lala), 1(Salima), 2(Beracha), 4(Liam)

Discovery 1:

Card: 9 of Cups: another character reacts strangely to the murder

A scream is heard by all from outside. They stand up and run outside despite the calls from the professor and the classmates. There are ancient-looking arrows jutting out of the stone leading back towards the plaza. There he sees the bodies for the first time.

Liam is floating in the fountain, surrounded by a halo of blood. Another body, the cashier from the juice stand, lies next to him, slumped over the side.

Besides the bodies is Kurshid, another student. He looks up at them and shakes his head.

“It doesn’t know how to use it,” he says.

They try for a while to get him to explain but all Kurshid does is repeat the words over and over, his eyes glazed and looking at the space beyond them.

Discovery 2:

Card: 5 of Cups Another Character reacts strangely to the murder

They leave Kurshid and hurry down the open corridors where they see more bodies. Tyoma is kneeling over the body of another student, Lala.

He is examining the arrow coming from her chest. He looks up as they approach. They ask him why he isn’t at the tree, and he responds he doesn’t know why, but he needed to be here.

They kneel beside Lala and close her eyes. Altar Tyoma doesn’t notice her body but continues to read the arrow. They yell at him and demand answers but he doesn't look at them.

All he says is, “We will seal it.” He repeats this endlessly every time they try to talk to him.

Discovery 3:

Card: 3 of Cups another character reacts strangely to the murder

They wander in a daze and find themselves before the tree in the courtyard. There are bodies around and they recognize Salima, a classmate, and Uriah, a healer. Before them is the tree in the courtyard, a large banyan tree, like many others in the city. The same as the tree they painted before.

They approach the tree, but hesitate when they see the body of Beracha. They fall to their knees and hold her tight. They had loved her once and still did as friends. Her clothes were intact but her skin was rotting and stank.

They looked up at the tree and saw the person tied to it. It was watching them and whispering something. They let go of Beracha and approached it. As they approach it, it’s mouth opens wide and out gushes rivers of black ink.

It filled their vision and choked their lungs and they too fell along with Squ’hev.

Act 4: Revelations

Report on the Tragedies in Squ’hev

The city knows of the tragedy, but they are one of many instances. They are a number in a report handed to the rulers of far off land who read with a heavy sigh. They are mourned together as a tragedy against humanity and not as an individual.

The city itself sustained massive damage, mostly to the astute university, libraries and other such places of power.

Reflection:

They know of an object of great power.

Do any other characters perceive the time loop?

Possibly the Tyoma

Character bonds:

Avatar and Beracha are ex-lovers. Avatar possibly seeks a relationship with Liam.

Loop 3

Act 1: Awakening

They awoke covered in sweat from a nightmare. They are still shaking but they cannot remember what it was that frightened them. They look around their room in the dark.

Consistent Details:

1. They see an old painting of a tree they did for a class assignment. It hangs above their desk.

a. Deja Vu: They look to the tree and feel a sense of dread as though something terrible happened on it.

2. They see a full moon outside their window on a clear night.

3. There is a calendar on the wall next to the door. It features an orange cat in a basket.

Morning Routine:

They wake up at 8 am, get dressed, and head downstairs. Their two siblings are already awake and their father is making coffee. They sit down, eat some cereal and have a mundane conversation.

Their father struggles with the coffeemaker before muttering to himself, “maybe I don’t know how to use it…” This elicits a sharp dread in them and they don't know why. They are unable to finish their breakfast.

They leave the house at 9 am and ride to their first class which begins at 10.

Act 2: Interactions

Liam

Card: 4 of Cups

They approach the small fountain inside the small plaza. A classmate is there, Liam, he is smoking and beckons them over.

They sit beside Liam and smoke with him. Liam tells them they found nothing in the catacombs last night.

He got scared because he saw a strange woman, a terrible bow on her back  and an equally terrible knife in her hand enter before him. He followed her quietly until he saw her approach a large stone archway that was pitch black in the middle from all sides.

He shakes his head and tells them he ran away back home after that.

He explains that today was the last day to pay off the tuition, and since he found nothing to sell he was expelled. They see something out of the corner of their eye but there’s nothing when they turn their head. They squeeze his hand before leaving for class.

Cashier

Card: Justice

They are hungry again from not being able to finish their breakfast. The juice stand in the courtyard is enticing and they decided to buy a small drink, halfway filled with small berries that taste like mangos and lychee.

They notice behind the counter there is a crossbow and a quiver of strange arrows. They decide to ask xem about it and xe respond by saying xe saw a vision xe would need it.  These things are not uncommon in the streets but on campus it’s a little odd.

They finish their juice and head into class.

Inciting Event

Card: The Hermit, a Festival

Outside the window they hear the priests chanting and swinging their thuribles. The festival has begun. They know Altar Tyoma will be the one preceding on campus. They think of the tree and wonder how it can hold such power. They wonder what would happen if they were to use ink instead of oil to anoint it.

Act 3: The Turn

Corpses Discovered: 2(Beracha), 9(Uriah), 7(Kurshid), 1(Salima), 3,(Cashier), 5(Tyoma)

Discovery 1:

Card: The World, the murder is showy

A scream is heard by all from outside. They stand up and run outside despite the calls from the professor and the classmates. There are ancient-looking arrows jutting out of the stone leading back towards the plaza. There he sees the bodies for the first time.

Kurshid is lying dead on the floor of the plaza, the cashier next to him, a knife in xier back. Liam sits against the fountain shaking violently.

They run up to him and take his face in their hands. They ask him what happened.

“It doesn’t know how to use it,” he says.

They shake him and ask him what’s happening. He snaps out of it, looks over to the body of Kurshid and starts to weep. He tells them that Kurshid came stumbling towards him, and that he looked sick.

His skin was blistered and around it appeared a cloud.

Liam was going to take Kurshid to the healers but the cashier suddenly shot him with a bow. Xe demanded to know if he had breathed in any of the clouds and when he didn’t answer xe almost shot him but Liam was quicker.

They ask Liam what they mean by the repeating phrase and he doesn’t know. He says it felt like a vision, like a warning.

Discovery 2:

Card: Jack of Diamonds, a character reacts strangely to a murder

They take Liam with them to find a safe place for them. They wander down the open corridors and they see more bodies. Tyoma, a local Altar is dead, the thurible still smoking beside him.

Lala, another student, is standing above his corpse.

Liam approaches her recklessly, rushing over and shaking her. He demands to know what is going on.

She turns to him, her eyes glazed and looking at the space beyond him.

“It doesn’t know how to use it,” she repeats to him over and over again.

Liam looks to them for answers but they know nothing. He leaves Lala and looks at the corpse. They look too and discover the same strange arrows, the one the cashier had, and the ones on the floor, sticking out of his body.

They notice something on the arrow embedded in Tyoma, there is a flowing script which they cannot read. Liam looks at it and tells them it is Divine Script.

Discovery 3:

Card: 10 of Cups another character reacts strangely to the murder

They leave Lala and find themselves approaching one of the Blessed Trees, the one nearest to the university.

Upon it is pinned a person with a tattoo on its forehead. That is all they can tell about it. Their features are blank and they forget what this person looks like when they take their eyes off it.

They approach the tree, but hesitate when they see the body of Beracha. They begin to fall but Liam holds them tight and  turns their face into his chest.

Behind them boots pad across the stone floor. They both turn to see a woman clad in black. She has the strange arrows stuck in her chest and her legs, but she still walks towards the tree.

She sees them and says, “Every time I am closer.”

“The sealers will not stop me,” she pulls an arrow out of her body and throws it in front of them.

“You will not stop me,” She pulls another arrow from her body,  and draws her bow, “They are done Deciding,” and they too fall along with Squ’hev.

Act 4: Revelations

Report on the Tragedies in Squ’hev

The city knows of the tragedy, but they are one of many instances. They are a number in a report handed to the rulers of far off land who read with a heavy sigh. They are mourned together as a tragedy against humanity and not as an individual.

The city itself sustained massive damage, mostly to places filled with people. Libraries, market places, and the ziggurat.  Citizens were found dead, either filled with arrows or seemingly no cause of death.

There is no true way to know why this happened. We can only assume it was a Decision.

Loop 4

Imparted Knowledge

Prophetic Vision

Alone at an Altar by Elena Murphy

Instruments: Deck of Cards, 1d6

Roll: 5

Card 1: 5 of Clubs relationships, random words

Roll: 3 soft and gentle like a cool wind

They wake suddenly in the night, drenched in sweat. They know this feeling and turn to the open window to see the cloudless night and the full moon. They stand in front of it this time and hear the cool whispers of voices from the room next to theirs. It’s their parents, they are speaking softly about how proud they are that they are attending university. They know that they accomplish great things with what they are doing there. They hear the words “Future, greatness, and listen,” most clearly.

Card 2: 2 of Clubs relationships, a melody

Roll: 4 soft and gentle

They are at ease for what feels like the first time in many years and they hear themselves humming an old song. It was one they thought they had forgotten, but the lyrics come to them like they had never left. They sing to the night sky about a great Decision and how loved people will always be no matter how hard things are.

Card 3: 7 of Diamonds civilization, flash of patterned light

Roll : 5 hot and sharp

The stars above twinkle bright then flash violently across their vision; they see now, Squ’hev is on fire. Squ’hev is drowned, it is torn asunder, it is crushed. They are shaking and crying, but they see their city destroyed over and over and over. Every time it is destroyed in a new, horrific way, but every time there are the winds, and they know that these are visions of things that will not come, but of ones that have already happened and will happen again.

Card 4: 5 of Hearts important people random words

Roll: 1 cold and hard

They fall to the floor and they are no longer in their home. They shake and tremble with a cold that is not there. Their body moves because it believes it must and they look up to see them.

Lest-We-Say-The-Name-Aloud stands before them, one entity as two people, one hand on each other’s shoulder and the other clasp together below.

The-Name speaks aloud in a language that vibrates their bones and palpitates every organ in their body. Their mind cannot understand the words The-Name speaks to them, but their body will remember.

Card: 6 of Spades natural things, a symmetrical ink stain

Roll: 5 hot and sharp

They find themselves still shaking on the floor of their room again. They stumble down outside, and towards the Blessed Tree behind the shops of the district. They reach it and find they have  no oil upon their person. They fumble around on their person and find a fountain pen.

They remember this thought, and pour the ink onto their hand before placing it upon the tree. They are still shaking as they sit on the ground and stare up at the handprint.

The night is silent for a long time and they start to cry, not understanding what to do. They reach out to the tree again and place both hands and their forehead against it and weep.

Their forehead stings violently and they pull back from the tree. The handprint is gone and their face is burning hot. They rush to the river and wash away the ink. They shake themselves and look upon their reflection.

The ink was set deep into their skin, in a tattoo made of thin lines swirling and weaving into unending knots.

Act 1: Awakening

They awoke covered in sweat from a nightmare. They are still shaking but they know what it was that frightened them. They look around their room in the dark.

Consistent Details:

1. They see an old painting of a tree they did for a class assignment. It hangs above their desk.

a. Deja Vu: They look to the tree and feel the burning on their forehead.

2. They see a full moon outside their window on a clear night.

a. They feel a breeze through the window and look for the Color Changing Winds. They aren’t here yet.

3. There is a calendar on the wall next to the door. It features an orange cat in a basket.

a. They run their hands over the days and wonder how many days they have seen.

Morning Routine:

They cannot go back to sleep but they are too tired to move. They lie in their bed, paralyzed until the sun arrives.

At 8am they head downstairs. Their two siblings are already awake and their father is making coffee. They sit down, and stare into their breakfast. They cannot talk, and make excuses about not being able to sleep.

Their father struggles with the coffeemaker before muttering to himself, “maybe I don’t know how to use it…” This elicits a sharp dread in them and they wonder if they will be able to.

They leave the house at 9 am and ride to their first class which begins at 10.

Act 2: Interactions

Beracha

Card: Death

They search for Beracha in the courtyard when they arrive. She is there, standing waiting for the ceremony to start even though she is hours early. She sees them and waves. They walk up to her and embrace her. They are still shaking, remembering the times they saw her dead.

She tells them she’s glad she saw them. She kisses their forehead and they remember the burning pain. She looks lost for a moment and she tells them, “The city cannot be saved, but everything else can be.”

They pull away and look at her, she looks back confused. They realize she doesn’t remember what she said and they leave.

Tyoma

Card: 9 of Swords

They are passing through the halls when Altar Tyoma grabs their arm. They are startled and look up at them. He tells them it is too much for someone so young as them. He pleads let him take it upon himself instead.

They shake their head and pull away. “You do not know how to use it,” they hear themselves say.

Altar Tyoma looks defeated but doesn’t stop them as they go.

Liam

Card: 9 of Pentacles

They hear the bell ring for the beginning of class but they do not care. They approach the fountain where they see Liam, sitting on the fountain, smoking.

Liam looks surprised to see them and tells them they should be in class. They shake their head and say they want to be with him instead. They sit down and listen to Liam tell the same story they have heard before.

They put their head on his shoulder and start to cry. Liam holds them tight even though he doesn’t understand what is going on.

They look up at him, take his face in their hands, and kiss him. He kisses them back but looks concerned and asks them what’s going on.

They tell him it will be starting soon. He laughs and says he knows, and he was planning on going to the festival on campus.

They shake their head and look at the juice vendor, “It's going to happen again and you need to follow me when it starts.”

Liam brushes the hair behind their cheek and tells them they will.

Inciting Event

Card: The Hermit, a Festival

They hear the priests begin to chant from the far courtyard. The festival has begun. They tremble and think of the tree and wonder how it can hold such power. They wonder if this will be the end.

Ending the Game

Corpses Discovered: 1(Salima), 2(Bercha), 5(Tyoma), 10(Nana), 9(Uriah), 6(Lala)

Liam turns when he hears someone approaching. He calls out to Kurshid, who is stumbling forward, a cloud gathering across his skin. They pull Liam to their feet and away from Kurshid.

“He must be sealed!” they hear themselves command.

Liam looks down at them confused but the cashier has shot him with a bolt from xeir crossbow.

Liam begins to scream but they cover his mouth, “It has begun, and you must follow me.” He is horrified but nods.

The cashier approaches them, another bolt already in xeir crossbow. Xe look both of them up and down, “Are you the one who will use it?”

They nod and Liam demands answers. They shake their head and say they will try but they need to get to the tree.

They rush through the campus, the way they know. There was always an order, and they did not believe it could be broken. Liam was by their side and the Sealer at their rear.

As they headed down the open corridors, they could see more bodies. Tyoma, dead, the thurible still smoking beside him, and Lala, her eyes are closed and an arrow in her chest.

Liam approaches them recklessly, rushing over and shaking them. The arrows in them are new this time, ordinary in every aspect.

They turn to the Sealer, who states plainly, “The Hunter’s found them this time.”

They pull Liam to his feet, and hold his face in their hands, “We need to go.” He nods and they continue together.

They find themselves approaching one of the Blessed Trees, the one nearest to the university. Upon it is pinned The Weight, with the Ink Crown on its forehead.

Below it are more bodies, Salima, Uriah, Beracha, and countless others. They have stopped shaking,  they are no longer crying, and they understand: they will no longer fall along with Squ’hev.

They warn the Sealer of the Hunter’s approach and xe hids.

Liam stands behind them with a hand on their shoulder. He looks up at the Weight and speaks, “It doesn’t know how to use it.”

They nod, for they know what they must do.

Behind them boots pad across the stone floor. Liam turns to see a woman clad in black. She has the strange arrows stuck in her chest and her legs, but she still walks towards the tree.

She is the same woman he saw in the catacombs, the one who went through the arch, and the one who released the winds.

The Sealer releases an arrow into her back, she stumbles, but straighteners herself.

“The Sealers will not stop me,” she pulls the arrow out of her body and throws it in front of the Sealer.

“You will not stop me,” She pulls another arrow from her body,  and draws her bow, “They are done Deciding,” and the Sealer crashes into her body.

The two fight behind them, struggling and wrestling each other to the ground. They turn to Liam, “Help xeim,” they command.

Liam is shaking but he pulls the knife from his belt and leaves their vision. They turn to Weight with the sound of violence behind them.

They approach slowly and stand before it.

“I don’t know how to use it,” it tells them.

“I do,” they place their hand upon its forehead. The ink crawls across their arm, hot and blistering and snakes its way up to the forehead where it rests as a crown upon their brow.

They hear the hunter shriek and feel upon them the weight of all ruins of Squ’hev. They cannot save the city, and do not know if they can save themselves for the Ink Crown controls the flow of time, but the Weight, having no memory of itself or its past, cannot understand time, and will never know how to use it.

And Squ’hev falls, for the first, the last, and countless times.

Official Report regarding the Destruciton of the City of Squ’hev

HRH Queen Diandra XIII,

Enclosed upon this letter your majesty will find several charts with more details regarding the Fall of the City of Squ’hev, but below I have included the briefest of summaries of my findings.

The city itself sustained massive damage in what appears to be fires, earthquakes, a flood, an ice storm and other natural disasters.  Nearly all public buildings have been destroyed save for the ziggurat in the center of the city.

When speaking to the citizens none of them know how any of this happened. They claimed that they were going about on a normal day then suddenly everything was destroyed in the blink of an eye, as if they were waking up from a pleasant dream into a disaster.

There is no true way to know why this happened. We can only assume it was a Decision given the nature of the disaster. People have begun to speak of a prophet, but little is known about them at this time and no one has come forward to claim the title.

Many lives were claimed this day, some were shot full of strange arrows and others seemingly dead with no cause. Upon the persons whose death could not be determined we found small iron ingots with Divine Script. We cannot begin to understand the nature of these items, only that they are Divine in nature. We were able to collect as many as possible for future study, but many have already been lost.

Best Regards,

Angelina Felspar
